“Oi ref, sort it out…!”

March 25, 2010

Well, it’s not long now until Fabio Capello announces the official squad for the 2010 England team, and only 77 days until the kickoff for the first match against the US. The tension is already mounting, and it’s brilliant that we’ve had so much attention for our catchy, little number “Chant like an English fan” this time around. BUT… more important than all of that in deciding England’s fate this year is the question…

“Will we be fortunate enough to have unbiased referees this year?”

In time-honoured World Cup tradition, we are bound to get stiffed with at least a French or Italian ref for at least one game, so fans, get your spare spectacles ready to throw at the pitch!

Just to help you along and vent your frustration at blatant knobbling by jealous foreign refs that can’t stand to lose fair and square, and you feel like screaming at them in their own language JUST-SO-THEY-UNDER-STAND here are the French, Italian, and German translations of “Oi, ref… ARE YOU BLIND…?”

German: “Hey, Schiedsrichter, bist Du Blind?”

French: “Hé, l’arbitre, n’est-ce pas aveugle ?”

Italian: “Ehi, l’arbitro, lei è cieco?”

77 days to go, get yer “Chant” on, and remember to always “Chant like an English fan!”

St. Patrick’s Day Practice for World Cup 2010

March 17, 2010

It’s March 17th – Saint Patrick’s Day – probably the ‘greenest’ day of the year (especially in America!), so green in fact they should use it to bulldoze over the Earth Day scam! Instead, though, we get to enjoy green Guiness and Irish madness for 24 hours.

The “Irish”-Americans go nuts today, with some of the biggest St. Paddy’s Day parades in New York city, Boston, and Chicago. Perhaps less well-known is the fact that it’s also the first official dress rehearsal for England supporters to get their “Chant” on and lubricate their best terrace voices.

Since Ireland didn’t qualify for the World Cup this year, let’s not hold that against them, and show the true English spirit and raise some glasses to our fellow island neighbours and get some serious drinking practice in.

If you feel like partying it up with a quick footie chant or two, remember to give “Chant Like an English Fan” a quick play, so you have something to sing and dance to, and get used to the words. It’s even been suggested, that if you get drunk enough, you might want to start singing:

“Ay-oh whey-oh, ay-oh whey-oh

“Chant like a leprechaun…!”

Chant Like a United Fan…!

March 13, 2010

Some exciting Barclays Premier League action promised tomorrow afternoon with the upcoming match between Manchester United and Fulham at Old Trafford. The Laddz have it on very good authority that Alan Keegan (http://www.alankeegan.co.uk/), the official compere at Old Trafford, will be giving “Chant Like an English Fan” a blast out to all the fans during half-time at the match.

“This is probably one of the greatest pre-birthday gifts I could ever have wished for,” beams Donnelly, co-writer of the song. “I won’t tell you how old I’ll be later this month, but it’s a bit of a milestone. I’m ecstatic at how well ‘Chant’ is being taking onboard by fans and supporters this year, it’s brilliant!”

Unfortunately our meagre marketing budget didn’t stetch far enough for tickets, but we hope at least some of the fans will catch on to the ‘Chantability’ of the track and adapt the chorus to a stand-stomping:

“Ay-oh whey-oh, ay-oh whey-oh… Chant like a United fan… come an’ score a goal, if you think you’re fast enough!”

We’d obviously love to hear some feedback from any die-hard Man Utd fans that are going to the match, to hear how the supporters reacted to the chant. Naturally a HUGE shout-out of thanks goes to Mr Keegan for plugging our track at such a large event.

Thank you very much, and United boys make us proud…!

The Laddz World Cup Video Competition

March 10, 2010

It’s World Cup 2010 South African-style in a little over three months, and the footie madness has already begun! Ain’t it brilliant?! We’re loving all the activity so far this year, there’s a great vibe out there, a lot of contenders in the ‘unofficial’ England song marketplace.

Writing a successful World Cup song for England is no easy feat, as those that have tried will tell you. Well, when we first released “Chant Like an English Fan” back in 2006 (a little too late, so it turned out!) we didn’t have that much time to get our video done. Below you can see what we produced:

This year, we’ve decided to turn it over to our fans, followers, and those that just love to mess around with this kind of thing. We know you’re a creative bunch, and we want YOU to create a World Cup 2010 video to accompany our song this year. Be as creative as you like, and put it up on our YouTube site (as per the link above.)

We’ll be looking in often to see what you come up with… no particular deadline or rules right now, just have some fun with it, and try to keep it ‘internet’ tasteful and in keeping with the beautiful game (no smut, please!!!)

As to prizes… well, let’s just say, if you come up with something that really surprises us and we like it that much, we’ve got some surprises of our own for you…! Intrigued enough to give it a try?

Go on, you deserve to give it a try…!

“Chant Like An English Fan” Crowned King By The England Megastore

March 8, 2010

Flying the flag at the England Megastore

We are very excited to announce, even though the World Cup kickoff isn’t for many months yet, that our early promotional work to put our song for the England squad contender out there into the marketplace has already started to have massive effect.

The latest piece of exciting news is that the England Megastore, your one-stop-shop for everything a true England fan could ever dream of,  has crowned “Chant Like an English Fan” their King of World Cup England songs for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

“We’re extremely excited about this early attention,” beams Richard Eyre, co-writer of the track. “In 2006, when we first launched the band, we were slow out the gate and the majors elbowed us out of the way a lot.” It didn’t stop their catchy little number getting some attention though; Channel Four, BBC, and Virgin, to name just a few.

“This year we really wanted to make a big splash,” adds Donnelly, the other half of this lyricist duet. “We were told we were starting too early with our promotion, but we’re basing our success on the results we’re getting this year.”

Along with some early airplay on BBC Lancashire, and an upcoming debut at Old Trafford during half-time at the Man Utd v Fulham match, this recognition from the England Megastore (also known simply as the England Football Shop) is a great foot on the ladder to even more promotion and publicity later on in the year.

A very big thank you goes out to the England Megastore for their chosing our track, and we wish them a prosperous World Cup football sales season, as we all band together and support England to a hopeful second win.

If anybody else would love to chose “Chant” as their favourite England supporters’ song this year, we’d love to hear from you!

The Lyrics…

March 2, 2010

You have been asking for them, so here they are… The Lyrics to “Chant Like an English Fan” by The Laddz, our unofficial World Cup Song for England contender… enjoy!

Chant Like An English Fan
(To the tune of ‘Walk Like An Egyptian’)
Lyrics by Richard Eyre & Anthony Donnelly. Music by Liam Sternberg

All the players that are on the pitch
Weve got the balls, dont you know
If they shoot real quick (Oh Whey Oh)
They score the goals like theres no one home.
All the English fans in the stands,
They’ve got the vibe, take a bet,
Were English Fans (Oh Whey Oh)
We chant it out, smoke a cigarette
Student types with their bongs and pipes, say

Ay oh whey oh, whey oh ay oh
Chant like an English Fan

The Lads they make their moves
They spin around as they cross the field
We got the moves (Oh Whey Oh)
You drop the ball then we strike it home
All the other teams, they try their best
They like a drink and the other stuff
Last orders ring (Oh Whey Oh)
You turn it round like an English Fan
All the fans here to rock the place, say

Ay oh whey oh, whey oh ay oh
Chant like an English Fan

Stomp yer feet to the beat and bend your back
Wave yer arms, then you rock the shack
Were cool you know (Oh Whey Oh)
So strike a pose for the Union Jack
If you want to find all the lads
Theyre drinking out all the local pubs
They sing and dance (Oh Whey Oh)
Pick up the birds, cruise around the clubs
All the German fans with their marks
And the French praying in the dark
And the Italians know
They cant chant like an English Fan
All the rest try and play their best, say

Ay oh whey oh, whey oh ay oh
Chant like an English Fan
Chant like an English Fan
Chant like an English Fan
(Come and score a goal if yer think youre fast enough)
Chant like an English Fan
(Come and score a goal if yer think youre fast enough)
