World Cup Song Writer Takes Vow-of-silence

May 13, 2010

The World Cup kick-off is just 30 days away now and golly things are getting tense. Will England finally bring the Cup back to the Land of Football? Anthony (“Mad Ant”) Donnelly, co-writer of our song for England, “Chant Like an English Fan” is taking no chances.

In honour of the game and in support of the England team, he’s taken a vow of silence – which started at midnight last night. Spokesperson for Mr Donnelly, Iva Loudvoice, read the following statement on his behalf:

“Thank you all for the wonderful support of our song for England, “Chant Like an English Fan”, you’ve all been wonderful. Every four years the world’s greatest football teams compete for the most coveted prize of all: The World Cup.

“This year is no exception, and England looks in tip-top form to do us all proud. In honour of our national team, I have sworn to take a vow-of-silence until England wins this year. I ask for your continued support and reach out to the girlfriends and wives of all the humble England supporters around the world and beg you to join me in my vow-of-silence so we can all finally enjoy some uninterupted football this time round!”

Well, there you have it… hopefully silence will reign in your household, so you can watch some quality football this year. Failing that, we find that masking tape works wonders too (especially, if applied during sleep!)

Thank you all so much for the continued AWESOME support of our corkin’ toon: Keep the “Chant” alive… and Chant Like an English Fan for the England squad this year!

Special Picklive Press Event…

April 12, 2010

To date we’ve only ever covered live football matches on Picklive. But with the World Cup just around the corner we’ve been wondering what it might have been like if we’d had Picklive since the start of time.

Would you have picked Sheringham and Shearer in ’96, Platt or Gascoigne in ’90 and of course would Maradonna have collected more than just +20 for his incredible solo goal against England in ’86?

Now you can find out. Between 6pm and 8.30pm on Thursday April 15th, we’re holding an event for press, bloggers and friends of Picklive at our offices in London. We’ll put a classic World Cup game on the big screen and you can play along in a knockout format. If you’re the winner after 90 minutes, you receive a prize for the charity of your choice

If you know your World Cup history and you’d like to attend then please drop us an email.

World Cup Facts:

April 6, 2010

Did you know… Only seven countries have ever won the World Cup? Rather hard to believe, but it’s true!

Since the first ever World Cup back in 1930 (ahhh, those were the days!) was won by Uruguay (they also won again in 1950), it has only been won by these six other nations:

  • Brazil (5 times)
  • Italy (4 times)
  • Germany (3 times)
  • Argentina (twice)
  • France (once)
  • England (once)

It just goes to show that it’s a funny old game afterall. Can England win again this year, let’s hope so!

Please continue your support and keep the “Chant-effect” going…!

“I Don’t Believe It!”

April 2, 2010

Just like the response of England fans when a player is fouled and the ref miscalls it, or the ball skims the wrong side of the goal post, our response this week was, “I don’t believe it!”

We want to thank everybody that voted last week for our track – and we were doing great at first by all accounts – which we thought hands-down was way better than what we were up against, but… sadly… their fans got out and voted more…!

Have a listen to the pile of old codswallop that (supposedly) beat our great Chant:

Although it is VERY refreshing that our idea from 2006 to use a catchy and well-known track with different lyrics is being used by many unofficial songs this year, it is disappointing that the talent of our song was beaten by shear better numbers of voters.

We wish God Save Our Team all the very best in the next round… we are beaten, but by far not defeated… In the end, as long as England wins… THAT should be everybody’s goal this year!!!

Glad to see so many contenders out there this year, let’s all have fun, chant it for England, and get ready for some excellent FOOTBALL this year!!!

Press Release: World Cup England “Chant” Sells 1 Million Copies!

April 1, 2010

*** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ***

London — With this years World Cup in South Africa only two months away and no official song from the England squad this year, the music scene has been awash with a record number of unofficial songs to encourage our national team this year. Even some celebrities have hopped onboard, with Rik Mayal’s “Noble England” probably the most notable.

What’s surprising this year, with England playing so well in the ‘friendlies’, is how well the underdog independent labels are doing with their songs. “Be The Best” by the Toyz have done extremely well by giving away 10,000 copies of their song with a new football game. Best of all – and most incredibly – a little-known London band, the Laddz, have shocked not only the British music industry, but have extremely strong sales around the world, topping the one million sales mark yesterday with their catchy and popular, “Chant Like an English Fan!”

Based on the tune to the amazing Bangles 80s hit, “Walk Like an Egyptian” (written by Liam Sternberg) but with amusing football-based lyrics (written by Richard Eyre and Anthony Donnelly) their debut track has taken the industry and the football world totally by storm.

“We couldn’t belive the news,” says Eyre. “When I got the call last night, I didn’t know what to say. We had an idea that the song would catch on, because it’s all a bit of fun really, but we had no idea!” Having missed out back in 2006, when the writing duo first put together the track, because of bad timing and other unrelated incidents, this is certainly an epic moment for the pair.

“Since we’d already put in the work on the track, this year we decided to just have some fun with it this time round,” states Donnelly, adding, “That’s probably why we also decided to see if this April Fool’s Day stunt would work…”

GOTCHA…!

Or did we? Thanks for taking this in good humour, and cheers for all the continued support. Keep following us on Twitter @theladdz and on Myspace http://myspace.com/theladdz

Who knows, perhaps we might sell a few copies when it actually goes on download May 14th…!

St. Patrick’s Day Practice for World Cup 2010

March 17, 2010

It’s March 17th – Saint Patrick’s Day – probably the ‘greenest’ day of the year (especially in America!), so green in fact they should use it to bulldoze over the Earth Day scam! Instead, though, we get to enjoy green Guiness and Irish madness for 24 hours.

The “Irish”-Americans go nuts today, with some of the biggest St. Paddy’s Day parades in New York city, Boston, and Chicago. Perhaps less well-known is the fact that it’s also the first official dress rehearsal for England supporters to get their “Chant” on and lubricate their best terrace voices.

Since Ireland didn’t qualify for the World Cup this year, let’s not hold that against them, and show the true English spirit and raise some glasses to our fellow island neighbours and get some serious drinking practice in.

If you feel like partying it up with a quick footie chant or two, remember to give “Chant Like an English Fan” a quick play, so you have something to sing and dance to, and get used to the words. It’s even been suggested, that if you get drunk enough, you might want to start singing:

“Ay-oh whey-oh, ay-oh whey-oh

“Chant like a leprechaun…!”

The Laddz World Cup Video Competition

March 10, 2010

It’s World Cup 2010 South African-style in a little over three months, and the footie madness has already begun! Ain’t it brilliant?! We’re loving all the activity so far this year, there’s a great vibe out there, a lot of contenders in the ‘unofficial’ England song marketplace.

Writing a successful World Cup song for England is no easy feat, as those that have tried will tell you. Well, when we first released “Chant Like an English Fan” back in 2006 (a little too late, so it turned out!) we didn’t have that much time to get our video done. Below you can see what we produced:

This year, we’ve decided to turn it over to our fans, followers, and those that just love to mess around with this kind of thing. We know you’re a creative bunch, and we want YOU to create a World Cup 2010 video to accompany our song this year. Be as creative as you like, and put it up on our YouTube site (as per the link above.)

We’ll be looking in often to see what you come up with… no particular deadline or rules right now, just have some fun with it, and try to keep it ‘internet’ tasteful and in keeping with the beautiful game (no smut, please!!!)

As to prizes… well, let’s just say, if you come up with something that really surprises us and we like it that much, we’ve got some surprises of our own for you…! Intrigued enough to give it a try?

Go on, you deserve to give it a try…!
