England v USA June 12th

June 12, 2010

We’re all still reeling… 1 – 1 final score… I think the Brazilian ref couldn’t wait to stop the painful game!

Am I the only one still feeling sick about Green’s “butterfingers’…?

The game started well, with it looking like all America was going to win was the toss, with England scoring an impressive early goal in the first 4 minutes!!! Then tragedy struck right before half-time… I can’t bear to write about the cock-up that will haunt Green’s career forever (unless England go on to finally win!)

A lack-lustre second half, with neither side really showing much spunk or passion, and obviously a very disappointing final result. For England to have any chance in future matches, especially against stronger and more experienced teams (seriously chaps, America…? It should have been a 2-0 walkover!) we have to start playing like a united force, not a bunch of glory-seekers… a little bit more teamwork and we’ll have some better footie as the weeks go on.

As to our World Record attempt… as disappointing as England’s effort on the pitch today: lack of manpower and ‘technical’ difficulties (including a person that shall remain nameless on our squad, but not Richard and Mad Ant) put a big spanner in the works of the attempt… falling rather short of our 1966 goal, so far, we’ve had reports back from a little under 100 pubs that could actually participate and play the track at half-time.

A BIG thank you to all the pubs that took part around the world. We made a valient attempt… not easy to pull off a new World Record at such short notice and with only a two-man team!

Looking forward to some excellent football over the coming weeks… and may the best team (England!) win…!!!

England Fan…?

May 29, 2010

Yeah, we know… and thanks (all 97 of you so far!) for pointing out the obviousness of our “mistake“: why is the song called “Chant Like an ENGLISH Fan” and not Chant like an England fan?

Bloody good question!

Want the answer? Really, want the answer…?

Well, we could come up with a very clever answer to solve the mystery… Did we do it on purpose…? Is it some big marketing gimmick…? Is the secret to the Universe locked inside…? Nah, actually it’s rather long and boring, but to satisfy the curiousity of our fans that asked… all NINETY-SEVEN of you… that rubbed our noses in it, proving once again that you don’t necessarily need to be smart to have a smash hit, we felt we owed an explanation.

When Mad Ant first came up with the concept, the song was headed in a totally differnt direction. We’ll let him explain it in his own words:

I’ve always tinkered with lyrics. When I first came to the US, it bugged me that EVERYBODY kept saying the obvious, “Wow, you’re not from round here, are you Australian?” So, in order to keep my sanity, I made up a song called “Talk Like An Englishman” to the tune of the Bangles’ 80s hit “Walk Like An Egyptian”. It was more along the lines ofa Monty Python-style piss-take of all the jolly foreigners that can’t speaky-da-Engleesh.

“When I shared the idea with Richard (Eyre), we both realized footie season was upon us, and it was time to do a World Cup song for shits and giggles. That was the beginning of “Chant”. I guess, what with all the other stuff going on (putting the band together, learning about the music business, getting in the studio, etc.) and being rather drunk for most of the project – apparently alcohol is a good catalyst for creativity – nobody realized or bothered to mention that we hadn’t changed the English part to England.”

Phew! Well, now you know…

World Cup Song Writer Takes Vow-of-silence

May 13, 2010

The World Cup kick-off is just 30 days away now and golly things are getting tense. Will England finally bring the Cup back to the Land of Football? Anthony (“Mad Ant”) Donnelly, co-writer of our song for England, “Chant Like an English Fan” is taking no chances.

In honour of the game and in support of the England team, he’s taken a vow of silence – which started at midnight last night. Spokesperson for Mr Donnelly, Iva Loudvoice, read the following statement on his behalf:

“Thank you all for the wonderful support of our song for England, “Chant Like an English Fan”, you’ve all been wonderful. Every four years the world’s greatest football teams compete for the most coveted prize of all: The World Cup.

“This year is no exception, and England looks in tip-top form to do us all proud. In honour of our national team, I have sworn to take a vow-of-silence until England wins this year. I ask for your continued support and reach out to the girlfriends and wives of all the humble England supporters around the world and beg you to join me in my vow-of-silence so we can all finally enjoy some uninterupted football this time round!”

Well, there you have it… hopefully silence will reign in your household, so you can watch some quality football this year. Failing that, we find that masking tape works wonders too (especially, if applied during sleep!)

Thank you all so much for the continued AWESOME support of our corkin’ toon: Keep the “Chant” alive… and Chant Like an English Fan for the England squad this year!

“Chant Like An English Fan” Crowned King By The England Megastore

March 8, 2010

Flying the flag at the England Megastore

We are very excited to announce, even though the World Cup kickoff isn’t for many months yet, that our early promotional work to put our song for the England squad contender out there into the marketplace has already started to have massive effect.

The latest piece of exciting news is that the England Megastore, your one-stop-shop for everything a true England fan could ever dream of,  has crowned “Chant Like an English Fan” their King of World Cup England songs for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

“We’re extremely excited about this early attention,” beams Richard Eyre, co-writer of the track. “In 2006, when we first launched the band, we were slow out the gate and the majors elbowed us out of the way a lot.” It didn’t stop their catchy little number getting some attention though; Channel Four, BBC, and Virgin, to name just a few.

“This year we really wanted to make a big splash,” adds Donnelly, the other half of this lyricist duet. “We were told we were starting too early with our promotion, but we’re basing our success on the results we’re getting this year.”

Along with some early airplay on BBC Lancashire, and an upcoming debut at Old Trafford during half-time at the Man Utd v Fulham match, this recognition from the England Megastore (also known simply as the England Football Shop) is a great foot on the ladder to even more promotion and publicity later on in the year.

A very big thank you goes out to the England Megastore for their chosing our track, and we wish them a prosperous World Cup football sales season, as we all band together and support England to a hopeful second win.

If anybody else would love to chose “Chant” as their favourite England supporters’ song this year, we’d love to hear from you!

The Lyrics…

March 2, 2010

You have been asking for them, so here they are… The Lyrics to “Chant Like an English Fan” by The Laddz, our unofficial World Cup Song for England contender… enjoy!

Chant Like An English Fan
(To the tune of ‘Walk Like An Egyptian’)
Lyrics by Richard Eyre & Anthony Donnelly. Music by Liam Sternberg

All the players that are on the pitch
Weve got the balls, dont you know
If they shoot real quick (Oh Whey Oh)
They score the goals like theres no one home.
All the English fans in the stands,
They’ve got the vibe, take a bet,
Were English Fans (Oh Whey Oh)
We chant it out, smoke a cigarette
Student types with their bongs and pipes, say

Ay oh whey oh, whey oh ay oh
Chant like an English Fan

The Lads they make their moves
They spin around as they cross the field
We got the moves (Oh Whey Oh)
You drop the ball then we strike it home
All the other teams, they try their best
They like a drink and the other stuff
Last orders ring (Oh Whey Oh)
You turn it round like an English Fan
All the fans here to rock the place, say

Ay oh whey oh, whey oh ay oh
Chant like an English Fan

Stomp yer feet to the beat and bend your back
Wave yer arms, then you rock the shack
Were cool you know (Oh Whey Oh)
So strike a pose for the Union Jack
If you want to find all the lads
Theyre drinking out all the local pubs
They sing and dance (Oh Whey Oh)
Pick up the birds, cruise around the clubs
All the German fans with their marks
And the French praying in the dark
And the Italians know
They cant chant like an English Fan
All the rest try and play their best, say

Ay oh whey oh, whey oh ay oh
Chant like an English Fan
Chant like an English Fan
Chant like an English Fan
(Come and score a goal if yer think youre fast enough)
Chant like an English Fan
(Come and score a goal if yer think youre fast enough)
