It’s A Funny Old Game…

April 24, 2010

Some funny facts about our song “Chant Like an English Fan” by The Laddz, and some very early predictions…

Liam Sternberg, the writer and composer of the music and lyrics for “Walk Like an Egyptian” upon which “Chant” is based, is a Frenchman. Boo, hiss…!

“Walk Like an Egyptian” was originally performed by the brilliant girl band, The Bangles, who are American… England is playing the US in their first match on June 12th… more booing and hissing…!

The FA refused to play “Chant” at half-time during the friendly England vs Egypt match at Wembley earlier this year… boo, boo, hisssss…!

Now, some early predictions by Mad Ant based on the above… Perhaps some people won’t like our track because of the Egyptian, American, and French associations, but…

England WILL BEAT America 3 – 0 in their June 12th match…

The crowd at Wembley would have loved the song, but England still beat Egypt 4 – 0

If England is plays against France, England will win 2 – 1 after leading 1 – 0 at half-time…

Only time will tell, if Mad Ant is really a football tipster psychic, but the games are only a few weeks away now, and you read it here first…! Hoorah…!!!

REMEMBER: we need all the support we can get for our track, call your local DJ, radio station, or email them, ask for them to play our song, tell your friends, your neighbours, download our ringtone… play it at school, at work, at home… England’s gonna bring the Cup back home this year!!!

Special Picklive Press Event…

April 12, 2010

To date we’ve only ever covered live football matches on Picklive. But with the World Cup just around the corner we’ve been wondering what it might have been like if we’d had Picklive since the start of time.

Would you have picked Sheringham and Shearer in ’96, Platt or Gascoigne in ’90 and of course would Maradonna have collected more than just +20 for his incredible solo goal against England in ’86?

Now you can find out. Between 6pm and 8.30pm on Thursday April 15th, we’re holding an event for press, bloggers and friends of Picklive at our offices in London. We’ll put a classic World Cup game on the big screen and you can play along in a knockout format. If you’re the winner after 90 minutes, you receive a prize for the charity of your choice

If you know your World Cup history and you’d like to attend then please drop us an email.

World Cup Facts:

April 6, 2010

Did you know… Only seven countries have ever won the World Cup? Rather hard to believe, but it’s true!

Since the first ever World Cup back in 1930 (ahhh, those were the days!) was won by Uruguay (they also won again in 1950), it has only been won by these six other nations:

  • Brazil (5 times)
  • Italy (4 times)
  • Germany (3 times)
  • Argentina (twice)
  • France (once)
  • England (once)

It just goes to show that it’s a funny old game afterall. Can England win again this year, let’s hope so!

Please continue your support and keep the “Chant-effect” going…!

“Chant Like an English Fan” it’s England all the way…!

“I Don’t Believe It!”

April 2, 2010

Just like the response of England fans when a player is fouled and the ref miscalls it, or the ball skims the wrong side of the goal post, our response this week was, “I don’t believe it!”

We want to thank everybody that voted last week for our track – and we were doing great at first by all accounts – which we thought hands-down was way better than what we were up against, but… sadly… their fans got out and voted more…!

Have a listen to the pile of old codswallop that (supposedly) beat our great Chant:

Although it is VERY refreshing that our idea from 2006 to use a catchy and well-known track with different lyrics is being used by many unofficial songs this year, it is disappointing that the talent of our song was beaten by shear better numbers of voters.

We wish God Save Our Team all the very best in the next round… we are beaten, but by far not defeated… In the end, as long as England wins… THAT should be everybody’s goal this year!!!

Glad to see so many contenders out there this year, let’s all have fun, chant it for England, and get ready for some excellent FOOTBALL this year!!!

Press Release: World Cup England “Chant” Sells 1 Million Copies!

April 1, 2010

*** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ***

London — With this years World Cup in South Africa only two months away and no official song from the England squad this year, the music scene has been awash with a record number of unofficial songs to encourage our national team this year. Even some celebrities have hopped onboard, with Rik Mayal’s “Noble England” probably the most notable.

What’s surprising this year, with England playing so well in the ‘friendlies’, is how well the underdog independent labels are doing with their songs. “Be The Best” by the Toyz have done extremely well by giving away 10,000 copies of their song with a new football game. Best of all – and most incredibly – a little-known London band, the Laddz, have shocked not only the British music industry, but have extremely strong sales around the world, topping the one million sales mark yesterday with their catchy and popular, “Chant Like an English Fan!”

Based on the tune to the amazing Bangles 80s hit, “Walk Like an Egyptian” (written by Liam Sternberg) but with amusing football-based lyrics (written by Richard Eyre and Anthony Donnelly) their debut track has taken the industry and the football world totally by storm.

“We couldn’t belive the news,” says Eyre. “When I got the call last night, I didn’t know what to say. We had an idea that the song would catch on, because it’s all a bit of fun really, but we had no idea!” Having missed out back in 2006, when the writing duo first put together the track, because of bad timing and other unrelated incidents, this is certainly an epic moment for the pair.

“Since we’d already put in the work on the track, this year we decided to just have some fun with it this time round,” states Donnelly, adding, “That’s probably why we also decided to see if this April Fool’s Day stunt would work…”

GOTCHA…!

Or did we? Thanks for taking this in good humour, and cheers for all the continued support. Keep following us on Twitter @theladdz and on Myspace http://myspace.com/theladdz

Who knows, perhaps we might sell a few copies when it actually goes on download May 14th…!
